Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom March, downtown. The march is on Monday, January 19 from 10 am to 11 am. The march begins at Heritage Hall. There will be rolling street closures from W Vine St and S Broadway, proceeding east to Main St and Midland Ave, then west on Main St and back to Heritage Hall. Commemorative Program at 11 am.
One World Films, in conjunction with Lexington’s observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, will show the George Lucas film, Red Tails, at the Kentucky Theater, at 2:30 pm on Monday, Jan. 19, 2015. The film showing is free and open to the public. Red Tails is the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, a squadron of highly skilled black pilots. The men fought racism at home as well as abroad during the war. Mr. Ron Spriggs, a local historian and aficionado of Tuskegee Airmen History, will introduce the film. Mr. Spriggs is president of the Kentucky Chapter of the National Tuskegee Airmen Association.
The Carnegie Center hosts an MLK Day Community Celebration on January 19. The event will go on from 12:30 – 3:30 pm; there will speakers (including UK’s Bianca Spriggs), music & entertainment, free food, and arts and crafts for the kids.
On January 17, UK’s Center for Community Outreach will organize a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. The event will run from 11 am – 4 pm. There will be free shuttles running over from the Lyric Theatre to each site. Sites include the International Book Project, Habitat for Humanity, Catholic Action Center, the Carnegie Center, Hope Lodge, and St. Agnes House. The 21st annual Unity Breakfast takes place on Monday, January 19 at Heritage Hall. This year’s theme will be “Unity: Striving for Justice, Equality, and World Peace.”
UK’s Martin Luther King Center has a week of events scheduled to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Week. These include: Wednesday, January 14: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. film showing, all day, MLK Center. Thursday, January 15: Soup and Substance Presents: “MLK Silent March & Vigil: I Have a Dream,” 5 – 7:30 pm, Student Center Small Ballroom. Friday, January 16: MLK Diversity Fair, 11 am – 1 pm, Student Center Small Ballroom.
