A record breaking 170,513 spectators watched American Pharoah take the roses at the 141st Kentucky Derby. The Derby, which included 18 horses, was considered to have the deepest and most talented field in decades.
The race was run in perfect weather. Dortmund was first out of the gate, followed by Firing Line and American Pharoah. In the early stages, Dortmund and Firing Line traded the lead several times, with Carpe Diem and Pharoah close behind. Dortmund took the inside position, which he held throughout the race.
Famous faces in the crowd included Miguel Ferrer, Food Network’s Damaris Phillips, author Nora Roberts, Governor Steve Beshear, and Dean Norris (Hank from Breaking Bad).
