The inaugural Lex Latino Film Fest features screenings of Latino-produced films Thursday through Saturday at the historic Kentucky Theatre. Films include Rudo & Cursi, Who is Davani Cristal?, Sombras de Azul, and the centerpiece Avenues, a drama about an east L.A. man trying to integrate into his gang-centered neighborhood after a stint in prison (with a Q&A with director Dominic Martina as well as Mezcal and Mexican beer tastings). Houndmouth play at the Kentucky Theatre at 8 pm, along with special guest Andrea Davidson. Houndmouth are an alternative country band that has performed on Letterman and Conan, as well as at Lolla and Bonnaroo.
Showtime and VH1’s Hal Sparks performs at Comedy Off Broadway Thursday through Saturday. The Thursday show starts at 7:15 pm; Friday and Saturday shows start at 7:15 & 9:45 pm.
Blind Corn Liquor Pickers perform at Cheapside Pavillion as part of Thursday Night Live from 4:30 – 7:30 pm.

The LexArts Hop, a self-guided tour of the visual arts in downtown Lexington, is 5 – 8 pm. As part of the Hop, the New Editions Gallery exhibits local artist Lynn Sweet’s Ridgeride. In addition, UK Art Museum curator Janie Welker and director Stuart Horodner cover Laurel Nakadate: Strangers & Relations at the UK Art Museum. Strangers & Relations focuses on issues of identity, confrontation, and trust. Patrons of the LexArts Hop may begin at any location and visit as many of the venues as they would like.
Christ The King’s annual Oktoberfest is Friday and Saturday. This year, the festival features German food, kids’ games, live music, and the infamous Celebrity Cake Wheel. Headliners on Friday night are The Smithereens. Supporting acts include Johnny Conqueroo, Word For Ginger, Kenny Owens and Group Therapy, and Rebel Without a Cause.
The Festival Latino de Lexington comes back to the Robert F. Stephens Courthouse Plaza on Friday and Saturday. Expect two days of Latino celebrations and fun for the entire family, including live music and dance, cultural presentation, vendors, authentic cuisine, and more. Friday hours are 5 – 11 pm; Saturday hours are 4 – 11 pm.

At 2:30, the Farish Theater hosts Joan Walsh Anglund, editor-at-large of Salon and author of more than 94 books with 45 million in sales. Special guest author/illustrator Mary Engelbreit will also speak.
There is a showing of Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin at the Lyric Theatre at 1:30 pm. The film captures the life of Bayard Rustin, a crusader for racial justice and nonviolent activism in the 1940s.
The Lexington Philharmonic presents Bolero & Barnatan at the Singletary Center at 7:30 pm. Featuring New York Philharmonic Artist-in-Association Inon Barnatan.
The Fixx headline Christ The King Oktoberfest Saturday night. Supporting acts include Frogman, Wildside, Boogie G and The Titanics, and Thumper and the Plaid Rabbits. The music begins at 5 pm.
SUNDAY Sep 21, 2014
As a part of Sunday Salons in September, at 2:30 pm historian and author David Burg will open his 1920s Craftsman home, showing his collection detailing a lifelong love of art. In addition, Kentucky poet laureate Frank X Walker will read from his new fiction manuscript, The Devil Is Beating His Wife. The annual HarvestFest at the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is on Saturday and Sunday, between 10 am and 5 pm on both days. Expect hay stacks, autumn recipes, farm animals, live music, and more.

On the Verge presents an immersive adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at Central Christian Church. Shows start Monday through Wednesday at 7 pm.

Recycled Percussion perform at Center College’s Norton Center for the Arts at 7:30 pm. The athletic, humorous “America’s Got Talent” performers make catchy beats on bizarre, everyday objects and have played over 4,000 shows in more than 15 countries.

The 2014 Rosa Goddard Film Festival, an annual celebration of cinema classics, presents Agnes Varda’s Cleo From 5 to 7 at the Kentucky Theatre at 7:15 pm.
