Trader Joe’s opens in Lexington Friday June 29

Trader Joe’s on Nicholasville Road in Lexington.

Our long national nightmare is over…. on Friday, June 29, 2012, Trader Joe’s will open in Lexington, hot on the heels of its success opening in Louisville.

As we pointed out last Summer, Lexington residents have been “begging for a Trader Joe’s and some two-buck Chuck since the old County Market closed at Lexington Mall (which would’ve been a perfect location for it). This would add another layer to the already competitive landscape populated by Fresh Market in Lansdowne, and the newly opened Shorty’s (on Short Street), which offers convenience and diversity to downtown professionals who need quick pick-ups for lunch or dinner.”

The Trader Joe’s location joins a crowded field on Nicholasville Road, with Kroger just across the way, Good Foods nearby on Southland Drive, and Whole Foods just a bit south down the road in Lexington Green.

(None of these entries solve downtown’s still considerable food desert problems — or Hamburgistan’s desperate need for precocious miniature vegetables — but that’s a different story.)

As a recent PR Daily article pointed out, the first Trader Joe’s was founded “to to serve the overeducated and underpaid population of Pasadena—the journalists, teachers, museum curators and musicians. He chose this group because its influence is disproportionate to its salaries, and the members love to share their discoveries with friends.” Obviously, this has Lexington’s name written all over it.

The prospect of affordable kegs of olive oil alongside their tasty store brand hummus is a heady one indeed for Lexingtonians long forced to make the long northward bataan-ish march toward Cincinnati for mochi ice cream, two buck Chuck, and a side quickie to Ikea.

Lexington will likely embrace it just as America has.
