“Melungeons,” by Kentucky native and author Chris Offutt is included in the new anthology, Grit Lit: A Rough South Reader (University of South Carolina Press.) The story was previously included in Best American Short Stories, and Offutt’s 1998 collection Out of the Woods.
His recent work has shown up on screen as often as in bookstores (HBO’s True Blood, and Showtime’s Weeds). Look for his next credit on Season 3 of HBO’s crit hit Tremé, premiering on September 23, 2012.
He’s also at work on a new novel, which he says is “set in the hills of Eastern Kentucky.”
Work from Lee Smith, Rick Bragg, the late Harry Crews, and the late Larry Brown, are all included in Grit Lit.
Editor Brian Carpenter is a Centre College (and UNC Chapel Hill) grad. Editor Tom Franklin teaches at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.
