It’s been seven years in the making, but Town Branch Commons officially broke ground on July 2, 2018.
Town Branch Commons will be a transformative public-private park and trail system that traces the historic Town Branch Creek through downtown Lexington.
It will link our city’s two major trails, Town Branch Trail and the Legacy Trail, providing 22 miles of uninterrupted trail to connect downtown to our world famous rural landscape.
The two project components of Town Branch Commons include Town Branch Trail and Town Branch Park.
Town Branch Trail will be a dedicated bike and pedestrian path running through the Commons along Midland Avenue and Vine Street. The City of Lexington is overseeing this downtown trail along with other components of the first phase of construction for Town Branch Commons. This section of the Commons is fully funded by a diverse array of federal grants, and state and local funds.
Town Branch Park will be an inclusive and dynamic 10-acre park that will occupy the space between the expanded Lexington Convention Center and Oliver Lewis Way. The park is being funded by private donors. Town Branch Park is an independent nonprofit overseeing fundraising, design, engineering, and construction of the park.
The next phase of construction for the downtown trail project is anticipated to begin by Spring 2020 following federal reviews and permit approvals expected this fall.
