Ace Picks: Lexington KY Calendar May 30 thru June 6, 2013

[three_fifth]

Welcome to this week’s Ace Picks Calendar for Lexington, Kentucky — Ace’s highly curated and selective to do list for the next eight days in the bluegrass (also delivered to your inbox every Thursday morning via the Ace e-dition click here to subscribe.)

The to-do list in Lexington this weekend is diverse and a little spread out. You will need to hydrate frequently and keep moving. It includes: the 3rd Annual Harry Dean Stanton Festival, the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Fair, the Kenwick Bungalow Tour, the Bluegrass Living Garden Tour, and the kickoff for the Best of the Bluegrass, Bluegrass Festival.

This is just a taste. View Ace’s full Lexington Events Calendar here.

The Lexington Film League’s third annual Harry Dean Stanton festival kicks off this evening with the screening of David Lynch’s Wild at Heart at the Kentucky Theatre, followed by a Q and A kickin’ it with actor Crispin Glover.

Everything you wanted to know about Lexington’s Town Branch Trail but were afraid to ask? Oldsmobile plays tonight at Natasha’s in support of the Trail, and Van Meter Pettit will be on hand with a little presentation and Q and A.

FRIDAY May 31, 2013

Sturgill Simpson returns to Lexington as a solo act, for the first time without Sunday Valley. In a 2011 Ace interview, he said, “I think the thing that grounds our sound more than anything, is as soon as I open my mouth it’s gonna sound country or hillbilly…so there’s always a core root country sound.” His new album doesn’t stray from that, and doesn’t disappoint.

Red Dawn is tonight’s Fountain Films series downtown, as part of the Harry Dean Stanton fest.

SATURDAY June 1, 2013

The followup to Lexington Art League’s SITE exhibit includes an offSITE tour today of mini-installations beginning with a map pickup at the Lexington Farmers Market and wrapping up with a reception at Village Idiot.

Funnelcake season opens this weekend with the annual St. Elizabeth Ann Seton country fair. There will be rides, a monster rummage sale, and this being Catholicism: plenty of beer and games of chance.

If you love Lexington house and garden porn, put on your comfortable shoes and get moving: you have a lot of ground to cover today. The Lexington Council of Garden Clubs open the gates into some of Lexington’s greatest gardens on Saturday and Sunday with the annual Bluegrass Living Garden Tour. Competing for your Lexington home and garden fantasy attention today will be the annual Kenwick Bungalow Tour.

MONDAY June 3, 2013

Gangstagrass will perform at Natasha’s as part of the kickoff festivities for the 2013 Best of the week-long Best of the Bluegrass fest. You know their sound already — they were Emmy-nominated for the Justified theme song. (Justified archives here, if you need a refresher.)

Tonight’s Woodsongs also celebrates the beginning of the Best of the Bluegrass with The Cleverlys and Moore Brothers at the Lyric Theatre.

TUESDAY June 4, 2013

The Featured Authors for tonight’s Kentucky great writers series at the Carnegie Centre are Sarah Gorham, Brian Leung, and Kim Huston.

Tonight’s Southland Jamboree is Newtown in conjunction with the Festival of the Bluegrass.

WEDNESDAY June 5, 2013

Tonight’s Summer Movie Classics series is Singin’ in the Rain at the Kentucky Theatre.

Appalatin will play Red Barn Radio, and then there will be an Appalatin after party at Natasha’s.
