For weeks, a Kentucky teacher has made international headlines for writing a student’s post-election statement, “You can’t be a democrat and go to heaven,” on a white board in her South Laurel County High School classroom.
HuffPo reports she has since been reprimanded.
The controversy has centered around whether or not partisan political discourse belongs in public school classrooms — was it written on the white board to generate discussion? Does political debate in the classroom constitute a hostile learning environment?
No debate has emerged yet on whether or not “heaven” and attendant discussions of religion belong in public school classrooms.
