The newest trend for the ultra folks is a commissioned cocktail. So, the Lexington-based owners of the Derby horse that starts this morning as the favorite, Friesan Fire, commissioned mixologist and “Trivial Thursdays” host Mick Jeffries to create two distinct cocktails for their A.P. Indy-sired entry. Friesan Fire is owned by Vinery, the farm of Dr. Tom Simon of Lexington and Mallorca, Spain and Fox Hill Farms’ Richard Porter, Hobe Sound, Fla.
Friesan Fire is trained by Larry Jones, who had a bid with Hard Spun (2007) and Eight Belles (2008). Gabriel Saez will ride. And, according to his Twitter feed, @ukcoachcalipari is liking the horse for the win at his first Kentucky Derby of what will surely be many.
Pictured is one of the cocktails, the Friesan Flower. Jeffries said he tried to blend ingredients that reflect the connections of the connections. With a base of Bollinger champagne, this one will set you back, but if your horse wins the Derby, it is just the right toast!

3 oz. Bollinger Champagne
0.5 oz. St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
1 tsp. Creme de Violette liqueur
garnish with a tea rose.
