Think Pink: Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the Bluegrass
One of the most common cancers among women, Lexington is doing its share of spreading awareness this month. Shifting the focus from the ghouls of Halloween, residents of Lexington are making it a point to bring attention to breast cancer this month.
The Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure 5K, which occurs in various cities nationally, is on the first Saturday of October, beginning at the Robert Stephens Courthouse Plaza. The day will begin with a survivors breakfast at 7 a.m. Afterwards, survivors will be honored with a parade beginning at 8:30 a.m.
KentuckyOne Health will host the Yes! Mamm 5K on Saturday, October 15. Along with the race itself, the program will provide mammogram screenings for the under-insured. This year, the goal is to complete 500 mammograms across KentuckyOne Health locations across Lexington, including Saint Joseph East, Saint Joseph Hospital and KentuckyOne Health Imaging at Tates Creek.
The race will begin at 9 a.m. at the RJ Corman Railroad Group in Nicholasville.
Similar to the Race for the Cure, the American Cancer Society hosts a national walk in support of breast cancer awareness. On Sunday, October 23 the Making Strides of Fayette 5K will begin at 3 p.m. at the Legends ballpark. An opening ceremony will take place for onlookers to cheer on and honor those involved in the 5K.
Not A Runner?
Doctors Edward H. Romond, Aju Mathew and Kathleen L. O’Connor from the UK Markey Cancer Center will be honored at the Frankfort Country Club’s Bourbon & Jazz For the Cure on Saturday, Oct. 15. Food, drinks and live music from the Frankfort Jazztet will be provided.
The “party with a purpose” will include a silent and live auction that will support the Triple Negative Breast Cancer research being conducted by Doctors Romond and O’Connor. Additionally, will have a celebratory bottle signing by Buffalo Trace Master Distiller Harlan Wheatley and the UK Markey Cancer Center director Dr. Mark Evers.
On Friday, October 21, the American Cancer Society will host the All-In to End Cancer Celebrity Casino Night at The Livery. The event is typically held around Thanksgiving, but will coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month this year. The night will be filled with food, drinks and celebrity dealers. Dealers in the past include WKYT anchor Amber Philpott and the Lexington Legends mascot Big L.
“Our progress against cancer is no mere coincidence,” according to the American Cancer Society website. “We have made monumental advances by setting goals and focusing on priorities that allow the Society to have the greatest impact in the fight against cancer.”
Starting on October 16, all Proof Fitness locations in Lexington will host Classes for a Cure. Various 45-minute exercise classes will take place 11 am to 4 pm daily. Classes include cycling, yoga, boxing, TRX suspension training and others. Proceeds benefit breast cancer awareness and research via the Komen Foundation.
